Compelled to act after volunteering in the Calais “jungle” in 2015, humanKINDER Founder Emma and Chef husband Sparky, their son Felix and Bo the dog, left the UK in August 2017 and travelled 16,000 miles around Europe with The Welcome Tent, documenting the food they ate with the people they met.
Their journey connected them with a global community on the ground across Europe who are acting with courage and determination, despite the increasingly authoritarian conditions which are criminalising solidarity and ignoring International Human Rights Law.
Food was the universal language. Precious moments shared together with people from all over the world - challenging injustice by celebrating our shared humanity - learning from and about each other by preparing, cooking, eating and sharing Recipes of HOPE.
Now weaving together these stories, recipes, hopes and dreams into a Manuscript from Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, a vantage point across Europe, we are thrilled to announce The Welcome Tent has been awarded a global design research prize by the European Academy of Design and South Africa’s Design Indaba.
